 GOD IS STILL SPEAKING

"Never put  a period where God has put a comma."- Gracie Allen

Doesn't that sound strange.   "God is still speaking!"  You and I think of the Bible as telling us of things that went on 2000+ years ago.   Yet, we continue to find new things.   I m not necessarily talking about  the "gospels" that have been found in our own recent past.     I am cognizant of the new insights that we gather simply in the interpretations.

  • We must continue to look at the Bible in the terms of the matrix in which it was written.
  • We must continue to remember that history as was written then is not like the history that is recorded now.
  • We must remember that ongoing events somewhat dictated what was said.
  • We must remember that the writers of the gospels were much like us trying make sense out of a world in which they daily lived, and in a belief system that was new... that was strange.
  • We must remember that putting a stamp on the whole idea of oral tradition that fit what one possibly already believed"Â would slant one's ideas.
  • We must remember that we change daily as we continue on the way... on our journey.

Yet, the ideals of goodness of righteousness continue down to our day.  They are marked in the life of Jesus of Nazareth.   They are exampled for us to examine as we compare them to ourselves.  The events of Jesus life truth or myth(?) really are more important in the adage that Torah gave ; DEVOTION TO GOD, LOVE OF GOD, AND LOVE OF NEIGHBOR AS SELF.

BLUE COLLAR CHRISTIANS

    MARCH 2010

I received a call last month and someone asked me about who we were... meaning what were we like in terms of a church.  Using the trite terms;"Well we are a Trinitarian Christian Church, who believes that   God is still speaking" I felt very inadequate.   I mean of course we are all that  but is that all we are?  NO!

I attempted to go on with the idea that we are a church who continues on our individual faith journeys together.  We continue to seek.  We continue to study.  We continue to discuss.  We continue to  open our minds.  We continue to listen.  And we continue to "gather in the spirit to hear what it is that God would say to us."   And yet I felt inadequate and incomplete.

I finanlly decided like the worship of God there are many facets.  I believe that as a community of believers there are many   facets.  We are people seeking to love God and seeking to love neighbor.  Somedays we do better than others.  But always there is striving.  Always there is hope, knowled ge and faith that we can do better.  I want to say that we are perfect in welcoming and in helping the stranger to become a full member of our community.

But the problem with that is that we are a community.  We have 'warts'.  We even make mistakes not only with fiends we are attempting to make, but we make mistakes with each other.   What I think we are is a congregation of 'blue collar Christians'.  We are Christians attempting to be better.  We work at our Christianity.  We work as we place our faith in ways that helps us to seek understanding.  I see that we are God's people trying to be better as God's people.  I think  that is who we are.

I suppose if someone were to ask the question what are you like?  I suppose the best answer I can give is 'come and see.'  Come and be with us.

     Shalom ,

                                                                         Jim
